The French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI), in collaboration with LEX Africa, hosted a highly informative webinar on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on Tuesday, 25 February 2025. This session provided a valuable platform for industry professionals to explore the legal and strategic aspects of expanding across the continent.

Keynote speaker Pieter Steyn, Director at Werksmans and Chairperson of LEX Africa, provided expert insights into AfCFTA’s regulatory framework, highlighting protocols on trade in services, competition policy, and digital trade. He addressed key challenges, implementation roadblocks, and growth opportunities for businesses operating in Africa.

Key takeaways from the discussion included:

  • AfCFTA’s Economic Potential: The agreement establishes the world’s largest free trade area, aiming to boost intra-African trade and economic integration.

  • Trade Liberalization & Tariffs: The phased removal of 90% of tariffs over five years is set to facilitate the movement of goods and services across borders.

  • Regulatory Complexities: Businesses must navigate evolving legal frameworks, competition laws, and dispute resolution mechanisms.

  • Sectoral Growth: Opportunities exist in agriculture, financial services, transport, and digital trade, with policies promoting fair competition and investment protection.

  • Trade Barriers: Infrastructure deficits, regulatory uncertainty, and governance challenges remain key obstacles to AfCFTA’s success.

FSACCI extends its gratitude to LEX Africa and all participants. Stay tuned for more insightful events!
