Member News | From Matra to SEGULA: A Legacy of Innovation Shaping the Future

When discussing French industrial innovation, names such as Airbus, Ariane and the Renault Espace often come to mind. What is less widely known is that these iconic programmes share a common heritage: Matra.

Founded in 1945, Matra became one of France's most remarkable industrial success stories, contributing to aerospace, defence, automotive, telecommunications and space exploration. Over the decades, Matra played a key role in major technological breakthroughs, from satellite programmes and missile systems to Formula One and Le Mans-winning race cars, while also pioneering innovative vehicles such as the Renault Espace.

This spirit of innovation remains alive today within SEGULA Technologies.

In 2009, SEGULA acquired Matra Automobile Engineering, inheriting not only engineering capabilities but also a culture built around technological excellence, creativity and the ambition to challenge established norms. The acquisition brought together two organizations sharing a common vision: engineering as a driver of industrial progress and transformation.

Today, SEGULA Technologies employs more than 15,000 people worldwide and supports clients across aerospace, rail, energy, automotive, life sciences, defence and industrial sectors. The company continues to invest heavily in innovation, developing solutions in advanced manufacturing, digital engineering, Industry 4.0, simulation, robotics, new materials and sustainable technologies.

In South Africa, this heritage translates into a commitment to supporting industrial development, infrastructure growth and skills development. Through local teams backed by global expertise, SEGULA contributes to projects that help strengthen the country's industrial capabilities while developing the next generation of engineers and technical professionals.

The story of Matra reminds us that innovation is not only about technology. It is about vision, courage and the willingness to explore new possibilities. These values continue to form part of SEGULA's DNA today as the company works alongside its clients to shape the industries of tomorrow.
