Member News | New alumni network strengthens France-South Africa connections

In June 2026, the Embassy of France in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) officially launched their alumni programme during an event at the Standard Bank Art Gallery in Johannesburg.

The event brought together former beneficiaries of French-supported programmes and initiatives from across the cultural, academic and professional sectors, recognising the lasting relationships that continue to connect France and South Africa. The new alumni network aims to strengthen these connections by encouraging continued exchange, collaboration and professional engagement among participants.

Guests enjoyed a performance by Joburg Ballet, followed by a guided tour of the Homecoming exhibition led by Same Mdluli and Grethe Fox. The programme concluded with a networking reception, providing an opportunity for alumni from different fields to reconnect, exchange ideas and explore future collaborations.

The launch marks the beginning of a growing alumni community that will continue to foster dialogue, knowledge sharing and partnerships across the French and Southern African networks.

Homecoming: The return of the Johannesburg Art Gallery collection is open to the public at the Standard Bank Art Gallery until 31 October 2026. Entrance to the exhibition is free.
