EnviroServ has shared insights on the role of engineered landfills in South Africa's evolving waste management system. In a contribution by Kate Stubbs, Director of strategy, marketing, and business development, the company explains why landfill infrastructure remains an important part of responsible waste management, even as the country advances waste reduction and recycling initiatives.
The discussion highlights that while South Africa continues to promote the principles of the circular economy, not all waste can be recovered, recycled, or reused. As a result, compliant landfill facilities continue to play an important role in managing residual waste while protecting people and the environment.
According to Kate Stubbs, engineered landfills form part of the country's environmental infrastructure and support municipalities and industry in meeting their waste management responsibilities. These facilities provide a controlled environment for waste disposal and help reduce the environmental and public health risks associated with unmanaged waste.
EnviroServ also notes that engineered landfill sites support broader waste hierarchy. Waste reduction, reuse, and recycling remain the preferred options, while landfill disposal serves as the final step for materials that cannot be diverted from disposal.
The company believes effective waste management depends on an integrated approach that combines resource recovery with safe and compliant disposal methods. As South Africa continues to develop its waste management systems, engineered landfill infrastructure will remain an important part of achieving environmental protection and supporting long-term sustainability.
