Our member l'Alliance Française is organising on the 8th of June a music festival at the Newtown Precinct in Johannesburg from 11am to 7pm. Entrance is free of charge.

The energising power of live music will fill the streets of Newtown on Saturday 8 June 2019, when the Fête de la Musique brings yet another unforgettable day-long party to the streets of Joburg’s cultural heartland.

Now in its eighth year of treating the citizens of Jozi to new and eclectic forms of musical expression, this free public music festival is presented by the Alliance Française of Johannesburg and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), with the support of Total South Africa and in partnership with Bassline Live, the Market Theatre Foundation, Trace, Newtown Junction, Workshop Newtown and News Café.

Bring the family along, park safely at Newtown Junction, and come and enjoy an afternoon of fun, music, food and festivities as Joburg turns out in force to celebrate the unifying power of music, across boundaries and continents.

The block framed by Miriam Makeba, Lilian Ngoyi, Carr and Henry Nxumalo streets will transform into a giant pedestrian zone where six indoor and outdoor stages will feature more than 20 exciting South African, French and international music acts between 11am and 7pm.

The uplifting world-music vibes by a host of established and emerging artists – spanning genres ranging from Afro-folk to Zulu rock, from reggae to neo-soul, and from countries ranging from Mozambique to the Democratic Republic of Congo – will continue non-stop throughout the day on the various stages:

  • Trace TV stage from 11am: Refentse Solo, Tendaness, the US, Darkie Fiction
  • Work Shop Newtown stage from 11am: Grace-Attalie, Umle, Musa Mashiane, Deltino Guerreiro
  • Total stage from 12 noon: Les Fantastiques, Dark Blue Orchestra, Urban Village, Msaki
  • News Café stage from 12 noon: Finna Cry, DJ Monique, Nandele, Jackie Queens
  • Newtown Junction stage from 11am: PG_13, Gunshot Blue, Red Robyn, Tidal Waves
  • Market Theatre stage from 11am: Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble (two performances)

Plus, look out (and listen out) for the uplifting sounds of the Bambanani Brass Band as they make their way around the precinct during the day’s festivities.

Offering you the opportunity to discover fascinating new music and meet new friends – for free – this year’s Fête de la Musique on 8 June 2019 promises to be the most festive ever. It’s Jozi’s ultimate winter warmer
