A reflection on the second annual commemoration of International Day for Universal Access to Information

On September 28th 2021, the world commemorates International Day for Universal Access to Information. It was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation on 17 November 2015 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 28 September 2019.  This day highlights the importance of access to information laws, and their implementation worldwide in order to promote democracy and human rights.  The theme for this year is “The Right to Know – Building Back Better Access to Information”

The main objective of the commemoration of the Day is to accelerate the development of sustainable laws and policies that are aimed at making information accessible for all. This with the intention of cultivating informed citizens and societies to empower them to inter alia help shape laws and policies in ways that benefit society. The right to access information is recognised internationally , regionally and nationally.
