On July 14, 1789, the storming of the Bastille marks the first revolutionary day of popular insurrection and immediately symbolizes the end of the Old Regime. It began the French Revolution and came to symbolize liberty and democracy.

It was only under the Third Republic, through the deputy Benjamin Raspail, that the law of 6 July 1880 adopted 14 July as an annual public holiday for Bastille Day.
