French Development Agency Supports Namibia's Energy Security with Biomass Plant Loan
The French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI) member, the French Development Agency (AFD), has played a key role in securing Namibia's energy future.
AFD facilitated a loan of up to €100 million (over N$2 billion) for the construction and operation of a new 40 MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Station (OBPS). This project is expected to be a game-changer for Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower), enabling cost-effective baseload electricity production and boosting domestic power generation.
Biomass Power for a Sustainable Future
The OBPS will provide several benefits for Namibia:
- Energy Security: The power station will contribute to energy independence by reducing reliance on high-emission electricity imports.
- Grid Stability: The OBPS will strengthen the national grid, facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
- Environmental Sustainability: Biomass displaces fossil fuels, leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the project promotes sustainable bush thinning programs, helping to combat land degradation.
- Economic Opportunities: The OBPS is expected to create new jobs in rural areas and boost agricultural opportunities by addressing bush encroachment issues.
