Ensuring Water Security: The Critical Role of Wastewater Management in Gauteng
Water scarcity remains a pressing challenge in South Africa, and while much attention is given to drinking water shortages, wastewater management is an equally crucial yet often overlooked factor.
Kate Stubbs, Group Director for Business and Marketing at Interwaste, a platinum member of FSACCI, emphasizes the need for sustainable wastewater solutions. She highlights that failing infrastructure, pollution, and climate change exacerbate the crisis, while inadequate wastewater treatment puts further strain on the country’s already limited water supply.
Interwaste has taken proactive steps to address this challenge by launching a state-of-the-art Leachate and Effluent Treatment Plant in 2024. This facility can treat 43 million liters of wastewater annually, recovering 80-90% of clean water for reuse. This initiative supports both environmental conservation and economic efficiency, reducing reliance on freshwater sources.
The South African government and private sector are also investing in wastewater reuse and treatment infrastructure. Businesses are recognizing the financial and operational benefits of on-site wastewater treatment, ensuring long-term sustainability.
As Gauteng grapples with water security, wastewater management will be a key solution in securing the province’s future water supply.
