Platinum Members Drive Innovation at Africa Rail 2024
The French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI) is proud to celebrate the achievements of our platinum members at Africa Rail 2024, held this week at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
Bombela Operating Company, a leading public transport operator and FSACCI platinum member took centre stage with Nthabiseng Kubheka, CEO of Bombela and Country Director for RATP Dev, presenting a thought-provoking session titled "Youth Mobility Vision: Our Youth's Perspective on Public Transport in 2050." Kubheka highlighted the importance of youth engagement in shaping the future of mobility.
The presentation stemmed from a collaborative initiative by RATP Dev, which involved 32 young people from Johannesburg. These discussions explored the mobility challenges faced by the next generation, focusing on key areas:
- Addressing climate change with urgency.
- Striking a balance between user-friendly technology and human interaction, promotes social cohesion.
- Leveraging technology to enhance safety and reliability.
- Bridging the rural-urban divide to connect more people and create opportunities.
- Designing inclusive and participatory public transportation systems.
Kubheka emphasized the importance of listening to young voices: "The voice of our young people matters. Now is the time to reflect on building a better world for today's youth and generations to come."
RATP Dev, with its global network of over 23,000 employees, is committed to amplifying the Youth Mobility Vision. Kubheka pledged to deliver these insights and solutions to stakeholders shaping the future of mobility.

We also recognize the significant contribution of Alstom, another valued FSACCI platinum member. Alstom served as a Diamond Sponsor of Africa Rail 2024, showcasing their cutting-edge technologies and solutions for the African rail sector. Their participation underscores FSACCI's commitment to promoting innovation and collaboration within the French-South African business landscape.

Adding to the impressive display of FSACCI leadership, Africa Global Logistics (AGL), another platinum member, presented a thought-provoking session. Tony Stenning, Regional Managing Director for the Southern African region at AGL, tackled the critical topic: "Moving towards the Future: Partial or Complete Privatisation of Port Operations and Logistics Services."
Stenning argued that privatization is not just a buzzword, but a strategic imperative for the logistics industry. He highlighted its potential to unlock significant growth and enhanced competitiveness by attracting investment, streamlining operations, and creating job opportunities. He also emphasized the importance of partnerships with larger corporations to leverage resources and expertise, ultimately leading to modernized infrastructure and improved service delivery.
Stenning's session further emphasized the importance of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). He positioned PPPs as pivotal for ensuring that privatization efforts are balanced with public interests, fostering sustainable development and operational excellence.
FSACCI commends Bombela Operating Company, Alstom, and Africa Global Logistics for their dedication to advancing the future of African transportation and logistics. These initiatives align perfectly with FSACCI's mission to foster collaboration and innovation between French and South African businesses. We look forward to seeing these efforts' positive impact on sustainable and efficient infrastructure and services across Africa.
