EDF Renewables Achieves Milestone in Battery Energy Storage Development

The French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI) proudly congratulates platinum member EDF Renewables South Africa on a remarkable achievement in the renewable energy sector.

The consortium led by EDF Group, in partnership with Mulilo, Pele Green Energy, and Gibb Crede, has successfully reached financial close on three Oasis 1 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects this November.

Awarded as part of the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE) Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), these projects will play a critical role in enhancing the nation’s energy security and stabilizing the grid.

The Oasis 1 portfolio includes three groundbreaking projects located in the Northern Cape Supply Area:

  • Oasis Mookodi: 77 MW capacity with 308 MWh storage.

  • Oasis Aggeneis: 77 MW capacity with 308 MWh storage.

  • Oasis Nieuwehoop: 103 MW capacity with 412 MWh storage.

Together, these projects deliver an impressive 257 MW of capacity and 1,028 MWh of storage, funded through a R7 billion debt package raised from Standard Bank of South Africa and ABSA. These projects will operate under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement with Eskom.

A key feature of the Oasis 1 portfolio is its commitment to social impact. Each project allocates a 5% ownership interest to local communities through a Community Trust, ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy development are shared widely.

These projects are expected to be commissioned within 24 months, marking a pivotal step in the transition to a more flexible and resilient energy system in South Africa. As part of the first round of the BESIPPPP, EDF Renewables and its partners are leading the way in integrating large-scale battery storage solutions into the country’s infrastructure.
