South Africa Set to Roll Out New Driving Licence Cards This Month

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga announced significant progress in the introduction of new driving licence cards in South Africa, with printing slated to commence by the end of April.

During a media briefing regarding the scrapping of e-tolling in Gauteng on Wednesday (10 April), Minister Chikunga revealed that her department is nearing the completion of procuring a new printing machine for the cards.

"We are at the tail-end of the procurement process, as the team had to travel to France to inspect the machine firsthand," the minister stated.

She further confirmed that the department aims to initiate the printing of the new licences before the month's end.

"Before the end of this month, we will be printing new driving licences (cards) and will launch at least the first 100 per province, as we have said. We are moving in that regard," Chikunga affirmed.

Back in January, Chikunga disclosed that the Department of Transport (DoT) had not yet awarded a tender for the new printer and aimed to finalize the process before April.

Initially scheduled for launch at the end of March 2024, the new driving licences are now progressing toward implementation, promising enhanced efficiency and security for motorists across the country.
