Black Women-Led Companies Reshape South Africa’s Rail Sector
A major step in South Africa’s transport sector is underway as the Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM) Consortium brings Black women entrepreneurs and executives into key leadership roles.
The consortium includes African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), Motseng Investment Holdings, AWCA Investment Holdings (AIH), GIBB-Crede, and FSACCI members Alstom and RATP Dev. In addition, the consortium is bringing in MIH Rail and Infrastructure and Nozala Women Investments in key roles.
The group responded to the Gauteng government’s call for a new operator to upgrade, modernise, and run the Gautrain system. Together, they aim to deliver innovative, locally driven solutions for millions of commuters.
This initiative breaks barriers in a male-dominated industry by positioning Black women-led businesses as project leaders and subcontractors. It marks an important move toward economic inclusion and stronger representation in infrastructure.
Leaders such as Ipeleng Mkhari (Motseng), Gugu Sepamla (AIH), Makgola Makololo (Alstom), and Nthabiseng Kubheka (RATP Dev) are driving this shift, showing the value of diverse leadership in public transport development.
Beyond leadership, these companies actively invest in community growth, skills development, and local enterprise participation, contributing to South Africa’s long-term infrastructure goals.
