Lunch with the Minister: Home Affairs Vows to Clear Visa Backlog
FSACCI Engages with Minister Schreiber on Overhauling Department
On Thursday, 8 August 2024, FSACCI Director Sébastien De Place, a Partner at Forvis Mazars South Africa and President of the French Foreign Trade Advisors (CCE) in South Africa, joined business leaders and investors in a crucial dialogue with Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber.
Hosted by XpatWeb in Bryanston, the luncheon provided a platform to discuss the future of South Africa's regulatory landscape and its impact on the business community.
A key focus of the meeting was the department's significant visa backlog, which Minister Schreiber pledged to clear by Christmas.
He outlined a comprehensive plan to overhaul the department, emphasizing the need for increased efficiency, improved technology, and collaboration with the private sector.
"We need to view this project as a case study of how to drive reform in the whole department," Schreiber stated. "If this can be achieved, then we will be able to do a lot more."
The Minister acknowledged the department's reliance on outdated systems and insufficient staffing as major contributors to the backlog.
He highlighted the importance of integrating technology to streamline processes and reduce processing times.
"Standing in a queue for six hours is not dignifying. If home affairs can work, South Africa will work," Schreiber emphasized.
Schreiber assured attendees that the department would maintain rigorous standards while working to expedite visa approvals.
The meeting underscored the critical role of Home Affairs in facilitating economic growth and attracting foreign investment.
