Advancing Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Skills Development

Founder of House of Basadi, Lynette Johnson, led entrepreneurship and business training sessions from late January to early February in Bloemfontein as part of a sustainable menstrual wear skills development initiative.

The training focused on practical skills and basic business knowledge. Participants learned how to produce reusable menstrual pads using sustainable methods. The programme also covered costing, pricing, and basic financial management. This approach helped learners understand how to turn technical skills into income-generating activities.

The initiative aimed to equip students with tools to enter the informal economy or start small enterprises. By linking production skills with entrepreneurship training, the programme addressed both employability and enterprise development. It also promoted environmentally responsible solutions at community level.

House of Basadi is a South African social enterprise that provides vocational training in sewing and handicrafts to women and young girls from disadvantaged communities. The organisation develops practical skills in sewing, design, and fabric selection. Training includes hands-on instruction and mentorship to prepare participants for employment or self-employment.

In addition to training, House of Basadi offers custom clothing, home décor, fashion accessories, and corporate gifts made from African print fabrics. Products are created by artisans trained through its programmes. Through skills development and enterprise support, the organisation contributes to economic participation and sustainable local production.
