Alstom Ubunye: Driving Localisation in South Africa’s Rail Industry
As a proud member of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI), Alstom Ubunye is at the forefront of localising rail manufacturing in South Africa. Based in Nigel, the facility produces seven key rail components, from wheel frames to driver control panels, embodying a "Made in Africa for Africa" philosophy.
Tristan Le Masne, Managing Director of Alstom Southern Africa, compares train manufacturing to assembling a giant LEGO set with 10,000 pieces—70% of which are locally sourced. Unlike many industrial players that assemble abroad and conduct only final assembly in the destination country, Alstom Ubunye manufactures and assembles locally.

Since its official inauguration in 2019, Alstom has transformed the factory into a rail hub of excellence, modernising operations to supply components for 150 PRASA trains through the Gibela Rail Consortium. With over 1,500 local employees, the facility delivers 62 bogies, 62 end under frames, and various other components monthly. Investments in advanced robotics and upskilling programs have secured top industry certifications, ensuring world-class production.
By strengthening South Africa’s rail infrastructure and expanding its industrial footprint, Alstom Ubunye continues to drive sustainable growth and innovation in the region.
