ENGIE Breaks Ground on Grootspruit Solar PV Power Plant
FSACCI Platinum Member Drives South Africa's Energy Transition
ENGIE, a leading global energy and services group and a proud platinum member of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI), has commenced construction on the Grootspruit solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in the Free State province. This marks a significant step forward in South Africa's transition to a low-carbon economy.
The 75 MW Grootspruit plant is being developed in partnership with Pele Green Energy and is one of two solar PV projects currently underway for ENGIE in the country. The second plant, Graspan, is located in the Northern Cape and will also contribute 75 MW to the grid upon completion. Both projects are scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2025.
"This investment underscores our long-term commitment to South Africa, where we have been present for over 15 years with a portfolio of over 1.6 GW of operational assets," said Mo Hoosen, CEO and Managing Director of Renewables for Asia, Middle East & Africa at ENGIE. "Collaborating with partners like Pele Green Energy is essential for the success of these projects."
The Grootspruit power plant is expected to generate clean electricity for approximately 80,000 South African households while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 tons of CO2 per year. This aligns with South Africa's broader goal of achieving a net-zero carbon footprint.
Aurex Constructors and Ablon have been selected as the main contractors for the project, bringing their expertise to deliver this critical infrastructure.
ENGIE's investment in these renewable energy projects highlights the company's dedication to sustainable development and its role in shaping South Africa's energy future.
