Dibuka and Dibukafé: a shared space for reading, dialogue and cultural exchange

The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), a member of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI), offers a dedicated space for reading, research and exchange through Dibuka and Dibukafé in Braamfontein.

Dibuka is IFAS’ library, housing a collection of over 15,000 items in French, including novels, non-fiction, comics, children’s literature, and magazines. The library’s catalogue is available online. Located at 70 Juta Street in Johannesburg, it provides access to a wide range of French-language resources for students, professionals and the wider public.

A selection of books is also available on Fridays at the Lycée Jules Verne in Morningside, extending access beyond Braamfontein. Library membership includes access to Culturethèque, a digital platform offering e-books, press, music and audiovisual content. The library is open from Tuesday to Saturday, with extended hours on Thursdays, and is supported by a dedicated librarian available to assist members and visitors.

Alongside the library, Dibukafé serves as a complementary space for exchange and collaboration. Conceived as a ‘third space’, it hosts public discussions, exhibitions and cultural events that encourage dialogue between South Africa and France.

Members of FSACCI can register with Dibuka to access its collections and digital resources and may also enquire about using the Dibukafé space for meetings, events or cultural engagements. Email: dibuka(@)frenchinstitute.org.za
