New Immigration Directive Provides Relief for Affected Travellers and Air Crew

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has issued Immigration Directive Number 6 of 2026, introducing temporary measures for passengers and air crew impacted by recent airspace disruptions. The directive applies mainly to travellers using Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, and Emirates, including routes to and from the Middle East.

Senior Director of Africa and Europe at IBN Immigration Solutions, Andreas Krensel, explains the key provisions. “It’s basically a temporary concession for passengers as well as crew members of typically airlines out of the Arab region.” He adds, “This concession is valid until the end of May 2026 or a ceasefire in the region, whatever comes earlier.”

The directive outlines five scenarios to guide affected individuals on their visa status.

Holders of long-term visas that expire on 31 March 2026 can apply for a visitor visa to extend their stay in South Africa. For visitor visa holders, the directive allows a second extension, which is not normally permitted under immigration rules.

The directive also addresses cases where long-term visas have already expired. Applicants can renew their visas without submitting a Form 20. Krensel explains, “This directive basically waives the requirement of the Form 20, so you could apply for renewal straight away.”

In addition, the directive provides clarity on overstays. Travellers and crew members affected by the disruption will not be declared undesirable when exiting the country. Those who have already received an undesirability declaration due to recent travel can apply to have the ban lifted through a dedicated process.

IBN Immigration Solutions, a member of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, shared this update to support businesses and travellers navigating the current situation.

The directive remains in place until 31 May 2026 or until conditions change.
