EnviroServ Haztech: Turning Sludge Challenges into Sustainable Solutions
Customers impressed? That’s just a typical day for EnviroServ’s Haztech team. When others couldn’t deliver, we did. EnviroServ Waste Management (Pty) Ltd’s Haztech team successfully transformed a complex sludge management project into a win for both the client and the environment. After a previous service provider was unable to complete the project, we removed, transported, and safely disposed of 16,992 tonnes of dam sludge, including mercury and fluoride.
In 2024, Haztech launched the Sludge Dewatering Plant, an innovative solution designed to reduce operational costs for industrial sludge management, divert more wastewater from landfill, lower carbon emissions through fewer transport loads, and improve overall environmental performance. By identifying alternative uses for the waste stream, we moved it up the waste hierarchy for treatment and reuse, demonstrating that innovation combined with technical expertise produces tangible results for clients and the environment.
When a previous provider could not complete the client project between January and April 2022, Haztech stepped in. Our team successfully managed the removal, transportation, and safe disposal of the 16,992 tonnes of dam sludge, which contained hazardous substances such as mercury and fluoride. Recognising that bioremediation was no longer viable, the team developed a sustainable and cost-effective solution. Following a pilot project in 2023, the design was refined, leading to the successful launch of the fully operational Sludge Dewatering Plant in 2024. This innovation has delivered significant benefits for the client, including reduced operational costs, decreased wastewater sent to landfill, lower carbon emissions due to fewer transport loads, and improved environmental performance on-site. Additionally, the recovered sludge is now being reused, further enhancing sustainability and operational value.
