Alex Lavaud Appointed Deputy Consul of France in Cape Town

The Consulate General of France in Cape Town welcomed Alex Lavaud as the new Deputy Consul on September 1, 2025. A career diplomat, Lavaud brings valuable experience from his previous role at the French Presidency, where he worked within the protocol unit.
During his tenure at the Élysée, he was responsible for coordinating President Emmanuel Macron’s international trips and managing protocol for high-level events hosted in France. This experience provided him with a broad understanding of diplomatic relations and international cooperation.
Lavaud’s appointment marks an important addition to the consular team in Cape Town. His role will include supporting the Consul General in managing consular affairs and strengthening ties between France and South Africa.
He speaks French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, and some Arabic, a linguistic skill set that will be an asset in serving the diverse French-speaking and international communities in the region.
Lavaud’s arrival reflects France’s continued commitment to deepening its presence and engagement in South Africa, particularly through strong institutional and community support for French nationals and businesses operating in the Western Cape.
