Proparco Appoints Johann Choux as Regional Director for Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean

Proparco, the private sector financing arm of the AFD Group, has appointed Johann Choux as Regional Director for Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean. Based in Johannesburg, Johann leads a team that covers 13 countries, including South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Johann brings more than 18 years of professional experience, including 12 years at Proparco. He joined the organisation in 2013 and has held several roles contributing to the company’s development financing mission. Before joining Proparco, he worked in equity research at Natixis, corporate strategy and development at Boursorama, the leading French online bank, and corporate finance at PwC. He holds a degree from EDHEC Business School in France and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
After spending four years in Colombia, Choux returns to Africa, where he spent the first eight years of his career with Proparco. His appointment reinforces Proparco’s strategic focus on Africa as a key region for impact investment and sustainable growth.
The Regional Directorate for Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean plays a central role in advancing Proparco’s operations across the continent. Johann and his team aim to scale up financing that supports private sector development, currently amounting to around EUR 250 million per year. The regional office also works closely with other development finance institutions (DFIs) and local banking partners to strengthen economic collaboration and drive sustainable investment.
Through its activities, Proparco seeks to promote inclusive growth, support job creation, and contribute to environmental and social progress in the region. Under Johann’s leadership, the regional team will continue to build partnerships that advance private sector-led development and reinforce the AFD Group’s long-term commitment to Africa.
