South Africa is scheduled to observe 14 public holidays in 2024
South Africa is set to have 14 public holidays in 2024, offering extra days off for citizens to commemorate special events and participate in national activities. Notable occasions include a bonus day off for a public holiday falling on a weekend and an expected day off for the 2024 national elections.
While the official date for the 2024 national election is pending, past patterns suggest it will be declared a public holiday by the president to enable widespread voting. The 2024 elections are anticipated to align with the window of the last national election on 8 May 2019.
Another extra day off on 17 June 2024 observes Youth Day (16 June), which falls on a Sunday. According to the Public Holidays Act (Act No 36 of 1994), when a public holiday lands on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday. This designates 17 June as an additional public holiday.
The list of 2024 public holidays, as per the Act, includes:
- 1 January – New Year’s Day
- 21 March – Human Rights Day
- 29 March – Good Friday
- 1 April – Family Day
- May (TBD) – 2024 National Election
- 27 April – Freedom Day
- 1 May – Workers’ Day
- 16 June – Youth Day
